This was the result of a poll organized by the New York Dress institute among 500 fashion designers, style authorities, editors and socialites. The "just-barely-defeated list" included among others such names as Joan Crawford, Ginger Rogers, Lynn Fontanne, and two of Irene's friends - Loretta Young and Rosalind Russell.
